What is EFT?

What is Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT)

History

EFT is a set of tools that have been developed and refined over the years. The techniques were originally developed by Paul Callaghan as Thought Field Therapy, and later made known as Emotional Freedom Techniques by Gary Craig.

There are many coaches and therapists who use EFT in various situations and settings. There has also been a number of clinical studies done by various people such as Dawson Church, and also Dr. Peta Stapleton (a fellow Aussie!)

What is it?

It is stating what the problem is that you want to change – an event with an emotion that you have about the event – while you tap on specific points on your head and upper body. Tapping on these points have been proven to calm the body down, which is what you need to be able to process the past (or future) event in a different way.

Does everybody use EFT in the same way?

No, they don’t. This is one of the reasons why I did not have success when I simply tapped along with a video or someone else’s script. Don’t get me wrong, there are benefits, but if you want a real big shift, you need to be very specific, and sometimes you need someone else to help you see what you can’t see. If you have a very traumatic memory from your past, it is also advisable to tap with someone so that they can hold the space for you and ensure that you do not just retraumatise yourself!

Techniques implies more than one – I thought there was just 1?

There are numerous techniques if one has trained through EFT International.

There is the Basic Recipe, the Full 9 gamut sequence, the box container, some sneaking up and gentle techniques to name a few. It depends which one will be most effective based on the issue at hand.
